Surveillance without a PC with Synology NVR216
The external appearance is identical to a NAS system, but NVR216 product is specifically developed as a center for the management of IP cameras for video surveillance. All without PC, but via the display and with APP.
The safety of an environment, both domestic as a professional, is one of the areas in which technological development has allowed us to bring significant innovation. From the point of view of the hardware configuration requirements of a video surveillance system typically, it requires a control PC and a storage solution, on which to store the movies recorded by the cameras so that they can be displayed at a later time and kept as a historical record.
Different NAS solutions available on the market, intended for the public of small and medium-sized enterprises but also suited to the home user more advanced, integrated support for video surveillance systems. The integration inside them, a more or less powerful processor and the possibility to make available a large number of hard disk drives in parallel collects the classic requirements of a system for the video recording of environments, but typically requires the presence of a PC or a mobile device, via APP specifications, to configure and manage different parameters and functions.
Synology NVR216, offers a product that the external appearance is identical to many NAS solutions for the home environment and SMEs, but it is instead specifically designed as a surveillance center. It is available in two versions, respectively capable of handle up to 4 or up to 9 IP cameras.
Surveillance Station is the heart of the product, application developed by Synology and installed video surveillance starting from the Synology DSM operating system which is the basis of all the Taiwanese company’s NAS products.
The Surveillance Station App can be downloaded and installed also on other Synology NAS products, but Synology NVR216 allows you to manage up to 9 cameras balancing it all with a very low power consumption: Synology declares a matter of 15 watts as the highest ranking at the moment using up to 9 IP cameras for monitoring.
The monitoring software allows you to view real-time as captured by the IP cameras connected to the system, as well as view images recorded over time through the Timeline feature. The amount of video kept in the historic depends on the number of hard disk installed, and their ability, but you can extend storage by attaching a so as to have up to 5 additional hard disk Synology DX513 box.
Surveillance Station can send the app DS cam notifications when the cameras register the movement activities in the zones for which this is not provided, or when a camera is damaged or disconnected from the network.
The construction is reminiscent of other Synology NAS can accommodate two hard disks internally, without the hot swap feature which in this case turns out to be not as important for a NAS. In front are located the power button and operation LED, the network connection and the two integrated hard disk; in the back, we find the ethernet connector, two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, the connector for the external power supply, an eSATA connector for external hard drives and HDMI connector to connect a screen directly.
Building Synology NVR216 allows its use in standalone mode, with access via smartphone or tablet using the specially developed by Synology DS cam app or by connecting a full HD display, mouse and keyboard using the connections on the rear panel. It is not necessary to acquire a PC for configuration and for the daily management of their video surveillance station and obtaining a solution which is very similar to the conception of complete video surveillance kit produced by some companies.
The advantage of Synology NVR216, in comparison with the latter, is to be able to use the IP cameras you prefer, thanks to a list of compatibility that exceeds 4,000 models and a setup procedure that is extremely simple and intuitive.
