Fairly muted Toshiba has unveiled a new series of SSD called SG5, which is likely to be offered primarily to OEM customers. The cuts come up to 1 TB, while on the front, there is the classic form factor 2.5-inch 7mm thick, both M.2 2280, single or double density.
When talking about Toshiba SSD should always open a parenthesis, because the situation is quite smokey. After the acquisition by the Japanese company OCZ, it is difficult to understand what the strategy of Toshiba SSD field, signposted often in contradiction with each other within a few days while referring directly to interested companies.
We start from the certainties: Toshiba always has a very direct relationship with OEMs, why can be found within the different PC SSD Toshiba known brands, almost unknown to the public, since they are rarely sold directly to the consumer market. This consideration reinforces the belief that Toshiba has acquired OCZ just to have good cards to play where it was not present, although the issue is minimized by the parties, if questioned. Sometimes even denied.
With this premise, it is hard to understand for those who are facing the new Toshiba SG5, although we can assume that they can be targeted to OEM (Toshiba SSD client generally indicates on the site). Let us now turn to the description of the unit: interesting is the decision to offer two form factors, 2.5″ 7mm thick and M.2 2280, the latter used in several 1 and 2 in ultra-portable.
All units are equipped with SATA interface, the performance claims of 545 MB/s read and 388 MB/s write. The 2.5-inch models are available in denominations of 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB, while for M.2 version with chips on one side only (128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB), while the 1 TB has chips on both sides.
The chips used are TLC 15nm of new generation, while to note is the Quadruple Swing-By Code ECC technology, to control the consistency of the data. Here you will find the page on the official website, but that does not speak of guarantee of 1.5 million hours MTBF.
