Transfers via 400 Gps Ethernet with the new Marvell network chip
According to the company’s announcement, the 88X7120 is the first Ethernet chip capable of reaching a data transfer rate of 400 Gbps.
Marvell has just announced the launch of the 88X7120 chip, the latest addition to the Alaska C family designed for high-speed data center connectivity solutions, and other applications where high performance is required. The new solution has been specifically designed to address the transition in data centers from the usual 25 GbE and 100 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) technologies, to 50 GbE, 250 GbE and 400 GbE: the new bandwidth will make artificial intelligence applications more efficient and machine learning, and more.
The new technologies require an exponential increase in processing capacity and bandwidth I/O, and it is precisely for these modes of use that the 88X7120 chip has been specialized, which can manage a maximum of 16 ports 50 GbE, 5 ports 200 GbE or 2 ports 400 GbE, using 50G PAM4 modulation techniques.
The new product introduces Marvell’s physical transponder system (PHY) with high-speed Ethernet ports and is among the first on the market to fully support the new IEEE 802.3cd standards that define the 50GbE PAM4 ports.
The chip also supports QSFP-DD and OSFP port types for 50, 200 and 400 GbE installations, and features for backward compatibility with less advanced port types. It is a product that is not intended for the mass market, but only for top-level jobs, and that Marvell is delivering – through the first samples – to the most important trading partners these days. Chris Koopmans, manager of Marvell, said:
” Increasing thoughput at 50 Gb per line has been crucial to meeting the bandwidth requirements of modern data center environments. Our new-generation PHY transponders provide the highest performance solution on the market and will be essential to help our customers respond to the ever-growing demand for bandwidth for the networks of the future. “
