Ubuntu lands on Windows Store: The Linux distro available on Windows 10
Canonical Linux distribution, Ubuntu, is now available for download on the Windows Store for users who are participating in the Insider program.
With this, move is declared the war between Windows, and Linux ended years. One of Ubuntu’s most popular penguin operating system distributions is now available for download on the Windows Store, the Windows 10 App Store.
The user will simply have to download the package, install it, and then launch the Ubuntu terminal with its command shell directly from Microsoft’s operating system. But there are limits.
The feature is currently only available to users who are participating in the Windows Insider program, which is still open to everyone through a simplified procedure.
You also need to do some operations because the Linux bash works smoothly on Redmond’s operating system, such as activating the Windows Subsystem for Linux within Windows 10 settings.
Installing Ubuntu on Redmond’s OS does not receive the full operating system of its user interface, but only the ability to perform typical operations through the command line. For example, the user cannot launch applications designed for Ubuntu on the Redmond platform (at least not without intuitive procedures) for a function that is currently addressed to system programmers and administrators.
Ubuntu will be launched into a sandbox within Windows 10, just like SUSE and Fedora (the next releases on the Microsoft store). Of course, how many professionals will benefit from this feature. It is clear, that Microsoft continues with its opening up to competing platforms, a few years after the company’s true love statement to the penguin.
Ubuntu will not come to Windows 10 S, and it will not be available to all Windows users before the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Currently available only for the latest beta versions of the operating system, with availability to the general public not anticipated before the fall season.
