Is it just simplicity or magic? Someone has disregarded why I used the second term by talking about AirPods, as if I were to share them with a product of JK Rowling’s worlds.
Simplicity is magic, as the magician’s ingenuity resides in transforming a banal ” trick ” into a spectacular event. A table is as simple as the function it performs, but if a technological device of a category manages to rise many times above its peers, it is, in a sense, magical.
AirPods lack some control – I will never tire of saying – but every physical element, and every software implementation aims to make them invisible. The package is not just a package because it allows you to recharge, go to play or pause alone when you need it, you can use one or two without having to press any buttons or change settings … everything is designed so that they can ” understand ” What the user needs and ” react ” accordingly.
I’m deliberately exalting some aspects, and I would not end up mistifying a product (always earphones are) but if you say that the devil is in the details it’s just because these can make a difference.
In the magical world of AirPods, it is also the upgrade system designed by Apple. Or at least, they would have liked it. In these hours, firmware 3.7.2 was released, and the one with which most of the current buyers were shipped was 3.5.1.
Apart from the strange numbering that I have not yet fully understood, I was really surprised by the upgrade system. Already identifying the current version is not really the best, because you need :
- With AirPods disconnected from the phone go to Settings / General / Info.
- Scroll down the entire list.
- Close the iPhone to the enclosure of the earphones closed.
- Open the case and wait for the popup to appear with the charging indications.
- Tap on a popup outside the popup to make it disappear.
- Wait a few moments until the AirPods entry under SSEID appears.
- Enter inside this to find all (little) information.
Adding more, less passage, this is the way to go to that information, though sometimes it stays active with the already connected AirPods, and in others, it does not seem to follow all the steps. Now that I think I did not check if there is an Apple site page that illustrates everything in a clearer and more dry way. Probably there, but I let you have fun looking for it.
My own had the firmware 3.5.1, so I wanted to update them after reading in my RSS feeds the title ” Apple AirPods Firmware 3.7.2 Update Released ” on RedmondPie. They are magical, I thought between myself and me, so they will be updated on their own. But no, I still saw the old 3.5.1. Probably the spell would have come tonight or tomorrow, because after all they are earphones and updates are certainly not critical for elements of security that should be enforced firmly.
There was no hurry, in short, but I like to look behind the scenes to figure out how things work and take advantage of everything in my favor. To say more about geek: I wanted to update it right away and not wait for the conditions of Apple to happen.
All of this was explained in the same article and, I repeat, certainly in the manual or on the manufacturer’s site, but I find this already under my eyes and no further research was needed. The steps to force the update or more precisely to ensure that the conditions of the programming occur, are as follows :
- AirPods must be in their enclosure, and this is connected to a power source.
- The iPhone must be near and must be connected to a Wi-Fi network.
I followed these steps, and the update was fast but who knows when it would leave otherwise. My iPhone is often connected to the Wi-Fi network but the AirPods try to connect them to my charging station that is not close to it. As I have already pointed out before, it will be an update with some improvement in the usage experience, trivial bugfix I believe.
It’s not that you risk something not to update them, but the implementation here seems to me too cranky. I agree that a lot of them will find them up to date without even noticing it, but could not make a new firmware announcement appear in the popup on which to click to get it started? Magic is okay but not occultism.
