Western Digital has launched a new hard disk 314GB designed specifically for Raspberry Pi. Access and consumption are optimized on the small system, as well as the dimensions are reduced to a minimum.
Announced in late February, Raspberry Pi 3 represents a major evolution in the family on the performance plan. There is a quad-CPU ARM 64-bit core, an upgraded GPU and, above all, native support for wireless networking technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The new model is in practice much more versatile than previous iterations, and for those who need a lot of storage space Western Digital has designed an ad-hoc solution, a specific hard drive for Raspberry Pi as 314GB of storage space.
It’s called Western Digital PiDrive, integrates 314GB of storage space, and has a list price of $45.81 list in the United States. In the early days following the launch of the device it is being offered at $31.42, and it could be the best solution for those who use the small Raspberry Foundation system as a multimedia machine, and more.
PiDrive 314GB is 7mm thick and is based on discs Digital Blue which is also found in many laptops and mid-range PC. The difference is in the interface, that passes from SATA to USB.
The company has thought to integrate the connector in such a way that the connection with Raspberry Pi can be performed in less space as possible. In addition, the discs have been optimized to minimize the energy consumption while maintaining the best performance obtainable from USB 2.0 connectivity technology. PiDrive is also much smaller and cheaper than PiDrive Kit 1 TB (and $ 79) that the company was already selling as a specific solution, and much less finished, the mini-system.
The storage units will be sold with the bootloader BerryBoot already installed, so as to facilitate the installation operations for the user even in a configuration with multiple operating systems on the machine. Western Digital PiDrive 314GB is compatible with existing cables and PiDrive for sale, and is already available for purchase online as of WD Store.
